Just for Fun Friday: Ochoa Saves Mexico

The 2014 World Cup competition is well under way, and teams are fighting each other to advance from the preliminary group play stage. So far in this year’s competition, there have been a total of 60 goals, all of which have incited pride and depression across the globe as spectators gather to support their top picks. However, none of these goals were scored in the Mexico vs Brazil match this past Tuesday evening.

There’s been a lot of exciting games and outcomes that have upset predictions so far in the World Cup, but one of the most surprising outcomes was of the Mexico-Brazil match. The Mexican National Team is ranked 20th by the FIFA world ranking, and was expected to lose against the third place Brazil team. Ending in a no-score draw, each team tried their best to score goals to win and improve chances of advancing from group play.

Guillermo Ochoa, the goal keeper for the Mexican National Team was without a doubt instrumental in the outcome of the match, using his almost supernatural prowess to make several impressive, near-impossible saves throughout the game. His saves were so amazing that Mexico’s fans immortalized Ochoa almost immediately, creating memes about him likening him to religious figures, super heroes, brick walls and more, Ochoa even had a traditional Mexican song made in his honor. Ochoa was mentioned more than 2 million times on twitter, and he was a trending topic.

Just for fun this Friday, let’s take a look at four of our favorite Ochoa memes from the match on Tuesday.
