Wednesdays with Will: Casting Bananza, You Lose…You Die

It’s been awhile, my public, but I have returned once again to bestow my awesome presence upon you!

We have recently hit the gold mine of casting news, from the controversial casting of Ben Affleck as the new Dark Knight to yesterday’s long awaited news of who would play the coveted roles of Christian Grey and Anastasia Steele in the big screen adaptation of Fifty Shades of Grey. Here are three castings that have the most to lose.

Batffleck

Our Space Ben Affleck 2009If anyone will be under the microscope for the foreseeable future, it’s this guy. Warner Bros. is putting their entire DC universe into this casting. Not only is the Man of Steel franchise being put in the cross-hairs, but so is the new Batman franchise as well as the Justice League movie being developed. I don’t think it’s the worst selection, and no one can say that Affleck isn’t a phenomenal filmmaker; but his acting has been suspect at times. I would have definitely preferred a more unknown actor because it will be more difficult to spate Affleck’s previous works from the character. I hope this is another Heath Ledger-type of transformation, but I’m not really getting my hopes up.

Fifty Shades of Grey

Our Space Charlie HOff the bat, I will say I have never read these books, but this movie’s gigantic fan base helped it land on this list. The casting news for this movie hit the twitterverse only yesterday and the world has gone insane. Granted, I have an idea of the characters; Christian Grey is a sexual dynamo that has similar characteristics to Patrick Bateman (American Psycho…top three favorite movie), and Anastasia Steele is the embodiment of innocence until getting involved with Grey. Charlie Hunnam, who is best known for his roles on Sons of Anarchy and this summer’s Pacific Rim, plays Grey. Looks-wise, it could work (although I already have the Patrick Bateman look supplanted in my head). Dakota Johnson will be playing Steele. She’s cute and has that innocent library girl sort-of-look. When the casting news dropped, Facebook became a news feed of extremely ticked off girls. Lets hope for the worlds sake that this movie is at least up to snuff.

Star Wars VII

After the devastation that was the prequels, Star Wars has no room at all for a bad movie. They went in a good direction by getting J.J. Abrams to helm the ship (to the plight of the Star Trek fans), bringing the old cast back (rumored) sounds like a great idea, but the story needs to be spot on at the end of the day. The rumored story follows the children of Luke, Leia and Han. The casting for the children are the most important piece of making these films the redeeming light to series. Rumored casting has gone from Ryan Gosling and Zac Efron to Benedict Cumberbatch. Please, Disney, don’t give us another cardboard acting performance *cough* *cough* Hayden Christensen.
